What is Top Tracks?

Top Tracks® is a party game about music taste — the kind of argument every group of friends has anyway, turned into a game with rules and a winner. It began as a physical card game, and the web version keeps the original deck, rules and tone of voice, while letting phones do the dealing, the secret scoring and the adding up.

Each round, a category card is dealt: a genre like Motown or Heavy metal, a decade like The 90s, or an association like Road trip, First dance orBought it on vinyl. Everyone privately picks a song that fits. Then, one at a time, each player plays their song out loud and everyone else scores it — 3, 2 or 1 — without anyone seeing the scores. The tension builds round after round until the Big Reveal, when the totals are counted up from last place to first and the winner is crowned.

It is quick to learn, works for three friends on a sofa or a whole family at Christmas, and it is endlessly replayable, because your group’s music collection is the content.

How it works, in three steps

  1. Start a room

The host opens toptracks.tasticgames.com and taps “Host a game”. Friends scan the QR code or open the invite link and they are in the lobby in seconds — no app, no account, just a nickname.

  2. Pick and play

A card is dealt on every phone. Everyone secretly locks in a track that fits, then takes a turn playing it from their own music app while the others score it 3, 2 or 1 in secret.

  3. The Big Reveal

After the last round the scores are revealed from lowest to highest. The Big Winner gets the Winner’s Pick — one song of their choice, played in full. Everyone gets the night’s playlist to keep.

The cards

Four colour-coded categories, straight from the original deck.

  • Genres — Rock, Disco, Brit Pop, Drum & bass, One hit wonder, Love song, Musicals… Pick a track that belongs.
  • Decades — From The 50s to The 10s. Anything released in that decade counts.
  • Associations — Road trip, Childhood memories, Your name, Food & drink, Funeral march… The track that says it best.
  • Actions — Wildcards that change the round: Player choice, Shuffle (play whatever your music app serves up), Make a link, and Perform — sing it yourself.

The free game uses a 16-card taster deck. Every paid plan includes the full 56-card base deck, and expansion packs such as Around the World and UK Cities add more. Paid players can also write up to three private custom packs of their own cards — ideal for in-jokes, birthdays and office parties.

Ways to play

Start with a quick game on the sofa. Stay for the leagues.

TV and party mode

Open the TV page on a laptop, smart TV browser or cast tab, pair it with a four-character code, and it becomes the shared table: the join QR code, the card flip, who has locked in, the track playing now and a full-screen Big Reveal with fanfare. It never shows anything early. Free for everyone.

Teams

Split into two to six teams. Teammates suggest tracks privately and a rotating captain locks one in for the team; you only score other teams’ picks. Uneven teams are scaled so every track is worth the same. Great for big groups and mixed ages.

Remote games

On a video or voice call instead of the same sofa? Switch on Remote game and every phone plays the same 30-second preview together, with “Open in” links for the full track. The cards that need everyone in one room are left out automatically.

Leagues

Make it a regular thing. Create a league for your group, choose a season (a set number of games, a calendar month or your own dates) and play league nights for points. There is a live table, a form guide, head-to-heads, a season playlist and a Season Champion at the end. Remote leagues run rounds over days, with deadlines to pick and to score.

Crews and the Hall of Fame

Keep playing with the same people while signed in and you automatically become a crew, with a fun name (think “The Windy Badgers”) and a private Hall of Fame only your crew can see: most wins, win streaks, all-time most loved tracks, biggest comebacks and your game history. You can leave a crew at any time.

Profiles and The Chain Game

Optional profiles keep lifetime stats and a trophy cabinet of every award you have won. And for a laid-back night, The Chain Game drops the scoring: each player adds a song that links to the last one, building a chain — and a playlist — as long as you like.

Pricing

Start free. A free game is a complete game: two rounds from the taster deck, the secret scoring, the Big Reveal, the Winner’s Pick and the playlist. Free games include a few ads at natural breaks, and the host of a free game can choose to watch a short ad to unlock two extra rounds.

Unlock the full game with a monthly plan or a one-off lifetime purchase, each available with ads or ad-free. Any paid plan gives you unlimited rounds, all four game types, the full base deck, leagues and custom packs. Lifetime hosts can have up to 20 players in a room. Only the host needs to pay — everyone in their game gets the benefits.

Add expansion packs for more cards, bought once and kept for good, and the remote leagues add-on if your league plays over days rather than in one room.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to download an app?

No. Top Tracks runs in the web browser on any modern phone, tablet or computer. The host opens toptracks.tasticgames.com and everyone else joins by scanning a QR code, tapping an invite link or typing the room code. If you like, you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app.

Does everyone need to pay?

No — only the host. The room takes on the host’s access, so if the host has unlocked the full game, everyone in their game gets the full game. If the host is ad-free, the whole room is ad-free. Leagues are the one exception: every league member needs their own paid plan.

Which music services does it work with?

All of them. Top Tracks never plays your music for you: it records which track each player picked, and you play it out loud from whatever you use — Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, your own downloads or even a record player. Each track card has “Open in” links to jump straight to the song. There is also an optional preview mode that plays a 30-second clip of each pick.

How many people can play?

You need at least 3 players. A standard room holds up to 10, and hosts with a lifetime plan can have up to 20. For bigger groups, try team mode — up to six teams, each playing one track per round.

How long does a game take?

It depends on the number of players and rounds. As a rough guide, allow about three minutes per player per round: a free two-round game with four friends takes around 20–25 minutes, and the lobby shows an estimate before you start. You can add a pick timer if your group tends to dither.

Can we play when we are not in the same room?

Yes. Switch on Remote game in the lobby and play over a video or voice call: every phone plays the same 30-second preview in step, so everyone hears each pick together. For groups who can never get a night in the diary, remote leagues run over days, with a deadline to pick and a deadline to listen and score.

Do players need an account?

No. Guests just type a nickname. An account (only an email address — sign-in is by emailed link, no password) is needed to buy, to keep purchases across devices, and for profiles, crews and leagues. Accounts are for people aged 13 and over.

What happens if someone picks the same song?

The first person to lock it in keeps it; anyone else is asked to pick again — “Someone beat you to it — be adaptable!” The host can also decide how strict to be about tracks that don’t fit the card: “Be nice” lets the player re-pick, “Be mean” scores it zero.

Is it suitable for families?

Top Tracks is designed for teenagers and adults at social gatherings, and works well across generations. Hosts can switch on Family mode, which hides tracks marked as explicit from search and applies a stricter filter to anything players type. There is no chat between players.
